Kawazu Sakura Manju

When the early-blooming Kawazu cherry blossoms dye the town in color, light pink sakura manju appear in the shop windows of Japanese confectionery stores. Kawazu Town is the birthplace of the Kawazu cherry blossom. These manju, inspired by this seasonal spring tradition, typically feature cherry-colored dough wrapped around sweet bean paste and encased in a salt-pickled cherry leaf. Some makers use high-quality cherry leaves from Matsuzaki in West Izu, creating a gentle aroma reminiscent of sakura mochi. In addition to smooth red bean paste (koshian), there are local variations featuring citrus flavors like Unshū mandarin or New Summer orange. With a single bite, the saltiness of the cherry leaf and the sweetness of the bean paste melt together, spreading the essence of spring throughout your mouth. The soft dough and the perfect accent of the pickled leaf make this a delicious taste of early spring, perfect to enjoy while flower viewing.
