Unagi Pie

静岡県·銘菓

Unagi Pie

After a light, crispy texture comes the fragrant aroma of butter. Eel extract is subtly hidden within the pastry dough—that is the famous Hamamatsu confection, "Unagi Pie." It was created by Shunkado in Hamamatsu. The second-generation head, Koichi Yamazaki, drew inspiration from the French pastry 'palmier' based on the association that "Hamana Lake means eel," and introduced it to the world in 1961. The opening of the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Tomei Expressway provided a tailwind, helping it spread nationwide as a travel souvenir. It is also well-known by its catchphrase, "The snack for the night." It continues to be chosen by many people today as a representative souvenir of Hamamatsu.
