Abekawa Mochi

静岡県·銘菓

Abekawa Mochi

Freshly pounded, soft mochi generously coated with kinako and white sugar. As you take a bite, the savory aroma and subtle sweetness melt away delicately. Legend has it that Tokugawa Ieyasu was the one who gave it its name. It is said that when Ieyasu visited the gold mines upstream of the Abe River for an inspection, a man presented him with mochi coated in kinako, calling it 'Kinpun-mochi' (gold powder mochi). Pleased by this wit, Ieyasu named it 'Abekawa Mochi' after the river. During the Edo period, it became a famous specialty of the Tokaido road, and this tea shop even appears in Jippensha Ikku's 'Tokaidochu Hizakurige'. A beloved treat for travelers for approximately 400 years, it remains a popular souvenir near Shizuoka Station.
