Onsen Manju

静岡県·銘菓

Onsen Manju

Inside the plump, brown skin lies a generous amount of smooth red bean paste. Taking a bite of one while it's steaming hot spreads a moist, sweet happiness throughout your mouth. It is said to have originated in Ikaho Onsen, Gunma. Around 1910 (Meiji 43), Katsuzodo's first proprietor, Katsuzo Handa, created the 'Yunohana Manju,' using brown sugar to mimic the color of the iron-rich, tea-brown 'Golden Spring.' Later, after Emperor Showa purchased them in large quantities, their reputation spread nationwide, leading to the production of brown manju in hot spring towns across the country. It is a familiar, classic snack found in hot spring towns everywhere, making you want to pop one into your mouth right after a soak.
