Shibamata Taishakuten Kusa-dango (Mugwort Dumplings)

As you walk along the approach, the fresh, green scent of mugwort gently wafts through the air. These dumplings, generously coated in sweet red bean paste, have long been cherished as a specialty of Shibamata. Mugwort grows abundantly on the banks of the Arakawa River, and rice has traditionally been cultivated throughout this area. Due to these local characteristics, it is said that farmers began making these dumplings during the Edo period, and they became a famous feature of the approach as visits to Taishakuten grew more crowded. It wasn't until much later that they gained nationwide fame through the movie series 'Otoko wa Tsurai yo'. Pair them with a cup of tea and relax on a wooden bench. The time in this downtown area gently unfolds, accompanied by the scent of mugwort.
