Hanazono Manju

A moist jouyo (sweet potato) skin filled with plenty of smooth red bean paste. It is a heavy, luxurious confection that represents Shinjuku. Its roots are said to trace back to 'Ishikawaya,' founded in Kanazawa in 1834 (Tenpo 5). The business eventually moved to Tokyo, but after losing its shop and factory to a fire in 1929, it relocated to Shinjuku the following year. It was named 'Hanazono Manju' after the nearby guardian shrine, Hanazono Shrine. The manju, which carries the slogan 'Japan's highest and Japan's most delicious,' gained great popularity. In 1949, the 'Nure Amanatsuto' (moist sweet bean paste), made from reduced Dainagon adzuki beans, was added to its lineup of signature products. Its elegant sweetness makes it a perfect item for gifting.
