Ningyo-yaki (Doll-shaped Cake)
The fragrant aroma of freshly baked cake and the smooth red bean paste that emerges from within. A cute snack that fits perfectly in the palm of your hand. Ningyo-yaki is said to have originated in Ningyocho, Nihonbashi. Since the Edo period, this area was a hub for puppet plays and Joruri, with many puppet masters living there. Due to this connection, baked sweets shaped like the Seven Lucky Gods were initially made, which eventually evolved into the simple face-only shape seen today. During the Taisho era, craftsmen who trained in Ningyocho moved to Asakusa, spreading Ningyo-yaki shaped like famous landmarks such as Kaminarimon Gate and the Five-Story Pagoda. With its simple flavor baked one by one in individual molds, it is a classic Tokyo souvenir. If you find them freshly baked, please enjoy a bite right then and there.
