Kotoi Dango
Red bean paste, white bean paste, and miso paste. These three flavors lined up together create a beautiful sight, making this Mukojima's specialty dumpling. It is said that Kotoi Dango was started by Sakichi Toyama, a gardener, in the late Edo period. Mukojima, with its scenic beauty, attracted many literati and artists, and the shop began by entertaining them with these handmade dumplings. The name 'Kotoi' is believed to be derived from Ariwara no Narihira's waka poem, 'Na ni shi owaba iza kotoiwan... (If it is so named, then let us ask...),' as the setting of that poem is thought to be along the Sumida River. As the shop became well-known, its name remained in local place names such as Kotoibashi Bridge. Even after more than 160 years, the dumplings are still hand-rolled. You can feel the history of the Sumida River in every single bite.
