Imo Yokan (Funawa)
With a single bite, the fluffy, natural sweetness of the sweet potato spreads through your mouth. The charm of Funawa's Imo Yokan lies in its simplicity. It was created by Kazusuke Kobayashi, who ran a sweet potato wholesale business in Asakusa. He devised this as an alternative to Ren-yokan (jelly-like yokan), which was expensive and unaffordable for ordinary people at the time, and founded "Funawa" in 1902. It is said that the shop name was derived by taking one character each from the shop name of confectioner Sadakichi Ishikawa, "Funate," and the founder's name, "Kazusuke." Even today, the sweet potato skins are peeled individually by hand, and the product is made using only sweet potato, sugar, and a little salt, without any artificial colors or preservatives. This unpretentious sweetness has continued to be loved for over 100 years.
