Asakusa Ningyo-yaki

Walking through Nakamise, you are greeted by the drifting aroma of freshly baked treats. These are Asakusa's famous Ningyo-yaki, shaped like pigeons and five-story pagodas. While the origin of Ningyo-yaki itself is said to be Nihonbashi Ningyocho, they have been baked in Asakusa since ancient times. For example, 'Kimuraya Honten' in Nakamise is a long-established shop said to have been founded in Keio 4 (1868). The molds created by the first generation include four types: the Kaminarimon lantern, Raijin (the Thunder God), the five-story pagoda, and the pigeon. Each one captures the famous landmarks and local atmosphere of Asakusa. Watching the artisans bake them one by one in front of the shop is a familiar and nostalgic sight. Take a bite of them piping hot right on the spot. Please enjoy them as one of the many delights of an Asakusa stroll.
