Gokatteya Yokan
A round canned yokan featuring a signature red cylinder, produced by Gokatteya Honpo, a long-established shop in Esashi. The shop was founded in 1870 (Meiji 3), and the round canned yokan itself has been produced since 1938 (Showa 13), making it a long-selling Japanese confection. While adzuki beans are common in yokan, this shop's unique specialty is the use of kidney beans (kintoki-mame). You can enjoy a smooth, elegant sweetness along with the gentle, rich flavor characteristic of these beans. Even the way you eat it is unique: you push up the bottom of the cylinder and slice through using the included thread. This playful way of enjoying the sweet without getting your hands dirty is part of the charm of this famous confection, which has been loved in Esashi for over 150 years.
