Trappist Cookies

With a single bite, a crisp texture is followed by the gentle aroma of rich fermented butter. It is a simple and deeply flavorful cookie that evokes the tranquility of the monastery. These are crafted at the Trappist Monastery in Hokuto City. Established in 1896 (Meiji 29) by monks who arrived from France, it is the first monastery for men in Japan. Around 1897 (Meiji 30), the monks created fermented butter, and in 1936 (Showa 11), they released cookies made with that very butter to the world. This is a handmade flavor that has been preserved through days of prayer. Because they are simple, the flavor of the butter truly stands out. A staple Hakodate souvenir.
