Tokachi Wine
In this extremely cold region, the entire town grows grapes and brews wine—Tokachi Wine is the first wine ever produced by a Japanese municipality. In the early Showa era, Ikeda Town endured many hardships due to frequent earthquakes and severe cold damage. Under the initiative of the then-mayor, the town decided to challenge themselves with winemaking using mountain grapes that are resistant to the cold. In 1963, they obtained their license, marking the first time a municipality in Japan ventured into wine brewing. The following year, Tokachi wine won a bronze medal in an overseas competition, becoming a source of pride for the town. Tasting wine at the 'Wine Castle' standing atop the hill and pairing it with local Tokachi ingredients is an experience unique to this town. Every glass is filled with a story of pioneering spirit born from adversity.
