Furano Wine

Taking advantage of a climate similar to the famous wine regions of Europe, Furano has continued to produce wine for half a century. The producer of 'Furano Wine' is the Furano City Grape and Fruit Research Institute, a rare municipally operated winery established in 1972. Its history began with the cultivation of wine grapes on land where there were once no grapevines at all. They cultivate 'Furano No. 2,' an original variety created by crossbreeding high-sugar wild mountain grapes, and in 2005, they produced Japan's first ice wine. The wine is characterized by a refreshing acidity unique to the basin region. With factory tours and tastings available, it has become a staple spot for Furano sightseeing.
