Noboribetsu Onsen Manju
When it comes to souvenirs from Noboribetsu Onsen, fluffy steamed manju (sweet buns) are a staple. Particularly famous is the "Kuma Manju" (Bear Manju), which was born in 1970. Named after the "Bear Park" located in the hot spring town, it has become a long-selling favorite loved for over half a century. Made with Hokkaido red beans gently wrapped in dough prepared with Okinawa black sugar, a hint of salt serves as a secret ingredient to sharpen and balance the sweetness. While there was originally only the Bear Manju, the variety of flavors has gradually increased to include options like mugwort and white bean paste. Enjoy one as a snack after a soak in the hot springs. Taking a bite of a freshly made bun, its simple sweetness will softly complete your memories of traveling to Noboribetsu.
