Ryugetsu Sanpōroku

This is a famous confection of Tokachi, made to look as if the bark of a white birch tree has been turned into a sweet. Ryugetsu's Sanpōroku is a baumkuchen produced by an established shop founded in Obihiro in 1947. The name originates from the firewood used during the pioneer era. Straight trees were used for construction, while others were split for firewood; because the three sides of the split wood ends were each six sun (approximately 18 cm), it came to be called 'Sanpōroku.' The surface of the moist cake is finished with white and milk chocolate to resemble the bark of a white birch. It is considered an ancestor of the moist-style baumkuchen and is a highly acclaimed product that has received the Grand Gold Medal from the Monde Selection. It is a confection you can enjoy while feeling the history of the development of Hokkaido.
