Tanaka Shuzo
The only remaining local sake brewery in Otaru. Tanaka Shuzo was founded in 1899 (Meiji 32). While Otaru once boasted many breweries, this is now the sole survivor. Their flagship brand, 'Takaragawa', is carefully brewed using 100% Hokkaido-grown rice and brewing water formed from the snowmelt of Mount Tengu through many years of filtration as underground water. A major feature of this brewery is its 'four-season brewing' process, producing sake throughout the entire year. In this historic brewery that retains the atmosphere of the Meiji era, visitors can take brewery tours, making it a popular spot to enjoy both Otaru sightseeing and Japanese sake at once. It is a place where you will want to slowly savor the clear-tasting local sake along with the essence of the land.
