Trappist Cookies
These are a specialty cookie of Hokuto City, quietly baked by monks. Trappist Cookies are produced by the 'Our Lady of the Lighthouse Trappist Monastery' located in Hokuto City. It is the first monastery for men in Japan, founded by monks who arrived from France in 1896 (Meiji 29). The monastery has been engaged in making fermented butter since the Meiji era, and these cookies were born in 1936 (Showa 11) by utilizing that tradition. The dough, kneaded with fermented butter, features an attractive texture that melts in your mouth after a crisp initial bite. With their rich aroma of fermented butter and moderate sweetness, they are a representative confection of Hakodate and Southern Hokkaido. You can enjoy a flavor that is simple yet profound.
