Kunimare

With a single sip, a mellow and clear umami flavor spreads, born from the snowmelt of Mount Shokanbetsu. While it is a crisp, dry sake, it passes through the throat with a gentle clarity. The brewer is Kunimare Sake Brewery, which has continued in Mashike Town since 1882 (Meiji 15). It is the northernmost existing sake brewery in Japan. The pure soft water springing from Mount Shokanbetsu, at an altitude of 1492 meters, supports this flavor. It is said that the name 'Kunimare' was changed in 1920 (Taisho 9) in honor of the Meiji-era great general, Nogi Maresuke. The historic brewery offers tours and attracts many travelers. This is the northernmost local sake, a pride of Mashike, a port town that once flourished with herring fishing.
