Ogawaya Konko Manju
A manju that has been cherished in the temple town of Konko-cho, Asakuchi City, where the headquarters of Konkokyo is located. Ogawaya has continued to produce these as souvenirs for people visiting the shrine. The origin of Konko Manju dates back to around 1893. It began when a confectionery shop in the temple town started selling them as souvenirs for pilgrims; it gained such popularity that it grew into a representative local sweet produced by many shops in the town. The bean paste is wrapped in a sponge-like dough made from flour, eggs, sugar, and honey, then baked to a golden brown. With its fluffy dough and gentle sweetness, this simple yet never-tiring treat allows you to feel the warmth unique to the heart of Konko. It is a manju meant to be enjoyed along with the atmosphere of the temple town.
