Kanbukuro Kurumi Mochi

This is the famous 'Kurumi Mochi' from the long-established Sakai shop 'Kanbukuro,' which has been making it since the Kamakura period. Despite the name 'Kurumi' (walnut), there are no actual walnuts inside; the name comes from the practice of 'kurumu' (wrapping) the mochi in bean paste. A vibrant green bean paste gently envelops the soft mochi. Born in Sakai, which flourished as a trading port with the Ming dynasty during the Muromachi period, this treat boasts about 700 years of history. The elegant sweetness of the smooth, flowing bean paste is a unique taste you can only find here. In summer, their 'Kori Kurumi Mochi' (shaved ice topped with Kurumi Mochi) is also a specialty and popular enough to draw long lines. When visiting Sakai, please try this traditional Japanese confectionery that has been passed down through the ages.
