The aroma of them freshly steaming makes you stop in your tracks—this is Osaka's proud soul food. 551 Horai traces its origins to the "Hourai Shokudo" opened in Namba in 1945. It began when the founder took a pork bun he saw in Kobe and adapted it to be slightly larger to suit the tastes of Osakans, marketing it as "Butaman" (pork bun). In 1952, they began live demonstrations at the storefront, allowing people to enjoy the flavor that was previously only available in-store at home, causing its popularity to spread rapidly. Each juicy, piping-hot bun is packed with pork and onion filling. It is a taste that Osaka truly takes pride in, famously associated with the phrase "When there's 551..."
