Suehiro-do Satsuma-yaki

An adorable appearance that looks exactly like a sweet potato. In reality, it is a Japanese confection consisting of smooth red bean paste wrapped in a soft dough and baked. "Satsuma-yaki" has been a beloved local specialty in Sumiyoshi since the beginning of the Meiji era. The maker is Suehiro-do, a long-established shop that serves Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. This confection was created in the shape of a sweet potato, inspired by the popularity of steamed potatoes sold in the temple town, which were a specialty of Sumiyoshi during the Genroku era. Each piece is handcrafted by artisans who wrap smooth Tokachi adzuki bean paste in a secret dough recipe, skewer them with bamboo sticks, and brush them with egg yolk. It possesses a gentle, elegant sweetness that matches its fluffy appearance. With over 150 years of history, it is the perfect souvenir for visiting Sumiyoshi, Osaka.
