Freshly made mitarashi dango, slowly grilled over charcoal after your order is placed. These barrel-shaped dumplings, coated in a thick, sweet and savory glaze, are beloved as a specialty of Juso, Osaka. Produced by Kihachushuso Honpo, founded in 1948, the company name embodies the wish to "bring joy to the people of Yashima (all of Japan)." Along with their signature sake manju, these mitarashi dango are an exquisite product selected as part of "Osaka Mon" (Osaka-made goods). The barrel shape, rather than a round one, is a clever design intended to create fragrant char marks and allow the sauce to coat more effectively. Some shops even allow you to choose your preferred level of toastiness; the harmony between the fragrant charred bits and the soft dumplings is unforgettable once tasted.
