Yaogen Nikkeimochi

A traditional confection rich in the aroma of cinnamon, nurtured in Sakai, a city famous as the birthplace of the tea master Sen no Rikyu. It is said that Yaogen Raikodo has its roots in merchants involved in Nanban (Southern Barbarian) trade in Sakai during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. The origin lies in mixing cinnamon, which arrived from distant overseas through trade, into mochi, eventually creating 'Nikkeimochi' as a confectionery merchant during the Edo period. Fragrant and slightly spicy cinnamon is gently enveloped in soft, sweet gyuhi (sweet rice paste). Featuring a harmony of chewy mochi and an elegant, refreshing cinnamon aroma, this is a representative traditional confection of Sakai that has been enjoyed at various Sen family tea ceremonies.
