Omachi Taro-men
It looks like ramen or champon, but once you slurp it, you realize it is actually smooth udon. Served in a soup made from slowly simmered beef bones with plenty of toppings, it is the soul food of Omachi that once supported the coal miners. Taro-men was born in the Showa era in Omachi Town, which flourished due to the Kinosaki Coal Mine. It was a dish served in local Chinese restaurants to fill the bellies of those working hard under the sun and sweat. The slightly flat, thin udon noodles pair perfectly with the beef-bone-based soup. At one point, the shops closed and it became a 'phantom flavor,' but following requests for 'that taste once more,' it was revived in 2010 by a group of dedicated volunteers. Even now, the flavor is preserved in several shops throughout the town.
