Kashima Gatalinic Food
The taste of the local area, enjoyed heartily after running through the mud on the tidal flats. Delicacies of the Ariake Sea—such as grilled mudskipper and dried largescale flounder—soak into your hardworking, sweaty body. The Kashima Gatalinic is a rare festival in the world, set on the vast tidal flats of the Ariake Sea, which boasts Japan's largest tidal range. In 1985, local youths, realizing that neither Shinkansen nor highways would come to their area, stood up and said, 'Then we will do it ourselves,' launching the first event. Sliding on mud skis and crossing boards on bicycles—after getting covered in mud through the competitions, the bounty of the tidal flats awaits. Playing and eating: it is a full day of experiencing the Ariable Sea.
