Yobuko Morning Market

In the early morning, energetic shouting from vendors echoes through the port town. Freshly caught fish and 'ika-guruguru' (spiral-cut) overnight dried squid are on display—this is the Yobuko Morning Market, one of Japan's three great morning markets, alongside Wajima in Ishikawa and Takayama in Gifu. Its origins date back to the Taisho era. In Yobuko, which once flourished due to the whaling industry of the Karatsu Domain, 'fure-uri' (itinerant peddling) of whale meat and fresh fish was common. It is said that as shopping streets developed in the central town, vendors naturally transitioned from mobile peddling to the current style of selling from the front of their shops. Every morning from 7:30 AM (except on New Year's Day), stalls filled with freshly caught seafood, dried fish, and vegetables line the 200-meter street. Friendly interactions with the shopkeepers are one of the true treats of traveling here.
