Warasubo (Spotted Goby)

With its slender body, degenerated eyes, and rows of fangs visible in its wide-open mouth—this strange fish, known as Warasubo, is often called the 'Alien of the Ariake Sea' due to its grotesque appearance. It is a member of the goby family that lives only in Japan's Ariake Sea, hiding its long, eel-like body within the tidal flats. While its appearance might be startling, the taste is something else entirely. When the innards are removed and the fish is dried whole, then sliced and grilled or fried, it becomes a savory snack where the umami intensifies with every bite. Freshly caught, it can also be enjoyed as sashimi or in miso soup. It is a dish unique to Saga that surprises you with its looks and convinces you with its flavor, teaching you the true depth of the Ariake Sea.
