Bizen ware
No glaze is applied, and no painted designs are added. Bizen ware is a simple yet powerful pottery created solely by earth and fire. Centered around Imbe in Bizen City, it is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. With a history spanning approximately one thousand years, it is said to descend from the Sue ware of the Kofun period. Because it is slowly fired for about two weeks in kilns exceeding 1200 degrees Celsius, it possesses high strength and has been described as being 'so durable it won't break even if thrown.' The kiln transformations (yohen) created by flames and ash are unique every time, and during the Momoyama period, it was beloved by tea masters. It is said that the texture improves with use, and pouring beer or sake into it makes the flavor smoother. Please enjoy the warmth of the clay in your daily life.
