Muscat of Alexandria

Muscat of Alexandria

When you put a translucent yellowish-green berry in your mouth, it bursts with a plump texture, releasing an elegant sweetness and a noble, perfume-like fragrance. It is easy to see why it is called the 'Queen of Fruits.' Its origin is said to be Alexandria, Egypt, and its name comes from how it spread to various regions via the Port of Alexandria. Cultivation in Okayama is said to have begun in 1886 (Meiji 19) by Yoshio Yamauchi in a glasshouse in Nozaya Village, Mitsu District (now Kayanidani, Okayama City). This grape prefers high temperatures and dry conditions, making it difficult to grow; however, the success was supported by Okayama's warm, low-rainfall climate and the early adoption of greenhouse cultivation. Today, it is said that Okayama accounts for almost all domestic production. Each elegant berry is like a crystal of time and effort.
