Himenomochi

"Himenomochi," produced in Shinjo Village at the northernmost tip of Okayama Prefecture, is known as a premium variety of glutinous rice. It results in mochi with strong stickiness and a fine, delicate texture. Although Himenomochi originally hails from the Tohoku region, cultivation in Shinjo Village began in 1983. The significant temperature fluctuations characteristic of hilly and mountainous areas, combined with the pure water flowing from Mount Kenashi—a primeval beech forest at the source of the Asahi River—provide an ideal environment for growing glossy, high-quality glutinous rice. Today, it is a proud specialty that accounts for approximately 70% of the village's paddy rice cultivation. Freshly pounded mochi is an exquisite delicacy, smooth and highly elastic. It is also delicious when prepared as okowa (seasoned rice) or zoni (soup with mochi). Please enjoy the taste of this beautiful village, famous for its century-old "Gaisen Sakura" cherry blossoms.
