Nishiawakura Eel
An unexpected specialty of Nishiawakura Village is the 'Mori no Unagi' grown in the mountains. In this small mountain village far from the sea, land-based eel aquaculture is being carried out. Surprisingly, the aquaculture facility is located in the gymnasium of a closed elementary school. To make effective use of the timber produced from the forests that cover 93% of the village, a system has been developed to heat the water using thinned wood as fuel. 'The water is clean, there is thinned wood available, and there is plenty of space'—it turns out that these hilly and mountainous areas possess all the necessary conditions for eel farming. Eels raised in such pure water are odorless with plump flesh. Each single eel embodies the wisdom and ingenuity born from the cycle of forest and water.
