Yagake Post Town Gourmet

The former Yagake-juku in Yagake Town is a post town where the atmosphere of the Edo period still remains deeply. In the center, which flourished as a station on the old Sanyo-do highway, the streetscape of that era is carefully preserved. The charm of this post town lies in the fact that both the Honjin, where daimyo traveling via Sankin-kotai stayed, and the Wakihonjin, where their retainers stayed, remain as National Important Cultural Properties. Yagake is the only place in the country where both the Honjin and Wakihonjin have survived together. In 2020, it was also selected as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Scattered along these historic streets are eateries using local ingredients and traditional folk house cafes. You can enjoy a luxurious stroll—tasting local gourmet delicacies while tracing the vestiges of an Edo-period post town.
