Hayashima Rush Products

When speaking of Hayashima Town, the culture of rush (igusa) is indispensable. This town was once a major production center for rush and tatami mats, renowned throughout the country. Its history is ancient, with records dating back to the Muromachi period showing that tatami mats were supplied from Hayashima. During the Edo period, rush was planted in land enriched with salt created through land reclamation; the tatami mats woven here were shipped to Osaka and Edo under the name 'Hayashima-omote.' In the Meiji era, 'hana-goza' (decorative rush mats) even reached America as a valuable export. While the cultivation of rush itself came to an end in the Heisei era, that tradition continues today through various rush products. Experience the cool, comfortable sensation unique to natural materials found in tatami mats and decorative mats. Why not incorporate the warmth of Hayashima's handcrafted heritage into your daily life?
