When speaking of Hayashima Town, the culture of rush (igusa) is indispensable. This town was once a major production center for rush and tatami mats, renowned throughout the country. Its history is ancient, with records dating back to the Muromachi period showing that tatami mats were supplied from Hayashima. During the Edo period, rush was planted in land enriched with salt created through land reclamation; the tatami mats woven here were shipped to Osaka and Edo under the name 'Hayashima-omote.'
