Kamogata Somen (Hand-stretched Noodles)

Kamogata in Asakui City is the birthplace of hand-stretched somen, boasting a smooth texture that glides down the throat. The warm and dry climate of the Seto Inland Sea is ideal for sun-drying the noodles, resulting in thin noodles with a firm bite. The origins of hand-stretched noodle making date back to the late Edo period. It is said that Keisuke Harada of Kuchibayashi Village invited somen masters from Banshu and established a noodle-making business by building a watermill on the Sugitani River. The area possessed all the perfect conditions for noodle making: clean water springing from Mount Yasho, salt from the Seto Inland Sea, and high-quality wheat from the Takahashi River basin. These thin, delicate noodles slide effortlessly through the throat when dipped in tsuyu (sauce). Please enjoy a bundle nurtured by the winds of the 'Land of Sunshine' during a summer moment.
