Passion Fruit
When split in half, the flesh shines like jewels. As you scoop it into your mouth, sweetness and acidity burst all at once. Passion fruit is grown on the warm islands of the Izu and Ogasawara chains, including Ogasawara and Hachijojima. Tokyo is one of Japan's leading production areas, with much of the harvest coming from these islands. Cultivation is done carefully by hand. From pruning to ensure sunlight reaches the fruit evenly to pollination after flowering, each fruit is nurtured with individual care, making it a rare delicacy. Fragrant and sweet-and-sour, each piece feels as if it has captured the sun of the southern islands. It is delicious when eaten as is, but also wonderful in juices and sweets.
