Seafood of Tsukiji and Toyosu
Meltingly fatty, beautifully firm flesh. Fish gathered from all over Japan—and indeed, the entire world—reach their most delicious form here. Tsukiji Market was opened in 1935, inheriting the role of the Nihonbashi fish market which was destroyed during the Great Kanto Earthquake. Handling approximately 500 species of seafood, it was long known as 'Japan's Kitchen,' but its 83-year history came to an end in October 2018 due to aging facilities and other reasons. Its functions moved to the Toyosu Market in Koto Ward, where a new market with strict temperature control now carries on that legacy. Vibrant shops still line the area outside the market today. Please come and savor a seafood bowl (kaisendon) first thing in the morning.
