Tsukishima Monjayaki
It sizzles on the iron griddle, and you scrape off the perfectly browned bits with a small spatula. This is Tsukishima's specialty, monjayaki. It is said that the name originates from 'monji-yaki' (character grilling) from the Edo period, where people would play by writing characters on a griddle using flour dissolved in water; over time, this evolved into 'monja.' The current form is believed to have started with children eating it off iron plates at candy stores in Tsukishima. While there were only a few shops during the 1950s and 60s, they have multiplied to the point of crowding the Nishinakadori shopping district in the Heisei era. Gathering around the griddle with friends and enjoying it together—the warmth of the old downtown atmosphere is part of the flavor. If you come to Tsukishima, please make sure to experience sitting around a griddle at least once.
