Okunitama Shrine Kurayami Festival
During Golden Week, the approach to Fuchu Shrine is filled with the lights of food stalls. Yakisoba, takoyaki, candy apples—around 300 stalls typically fill the area from the station to the shrine with excitement. The Kurayami Festival is an annual grand festival held at Okunitama Shrine from April 30th to May 6th, with a tradition said to span over 1,000 years. The name is said to have originated from the practice of extinguishing all lights in the town during the procession of the portable shrines (mikoshi), carrying the deities through the darkness. The climax occurs on the night of May 5th with the 'Oide,' where eight mikoshi advance amidst the earth-shaking sounds of large taiko drums. Enjoying the flavors of the food stalls while surrounded by the sound of drums is a true feast exclusive to festival nights.
