Kichijoji Harmonica Yokocho
In narrow alleys, small shops huddle closely together. The smoke from skewers, the bustle of standing bars, and the steam from deli shops—the temptation of flavors never ceases, day or night. It is said that this corner originated from a black market that emerged in front of the station in 1945 (Showa 20). One theory for its name is that literary critic Kachuo Kamei compared the sight of the narrow-fronted shops lined up to the mouthpiece of a harmonica. After the daytime bustle of fishmongers and Japanese confectionery shops passes, izakayas light up the night. You can settle down in one shop or enjoy hopping between several. It is an alleyway where you can savor the very scent of the Showa era.
