Shinjuku Curry

The aroma of spices wafts through the air, with large chunks of bone-in chicken submerged in the sauce. This is authentic Indian curry born in Shinjuku. Among these famous shops is Shinjuku Nakamuraya, founded in 1901. Subhash Chandra Bose, an Indian independence activist, fled to Japan in 1915 and was sheltered by Nakamuraya. Later, when the coffee shop department was established, Bose shared the flavors of his homeland, leading to the release of 'Pure Indian-style Curry' in 1927 (Showa 2). At a time when curry at Western-style restaurants cost about 10 sen, this curry was priced high at 80 sen, yet it is said to have sold like wildfire. Known as the 'taste of love and revolution,' this dish continues to be loved in Shinjuku to this day.
