Yakumo Wood-carved Bears
A staple Hokkaido souvenir, the wood-carved bear. In fact, its birthplace is this very town of Yakumo. It all began in the Taisho era when Yoshichika Tokugawa, the head of the Owari Tokugawa family who pioneered Yakumo, saw a wood-carved bear during a visit to Switzerland while inspecting Europe. Thinking it would be a perfect winter occupation for farmers, he brought the idea back home. Then, in 1924 (Taisho 13), a bear created by a Yakumo dairy farmer was entered into an exhibition, marking the birth of Hokkaido's very first wood-carved bear. These bear figurines, meticulously hand-carved by artisans with every single stroke, are truly the origin of Hokkaido souvenirs. They are crafts that convey the warmth of wood and the charm of handiwork, making you want to display them for a long time.
