Soup Curry

Take a sip of the smooth soup. After the aroma of spices drifts through your nose, the savory richness of the bone-in chicken follows closely behind. Dipping the rice served on a separate plate and taking a big bite—this is the quintessential way to eat it, born in Sapporo. The roots trace back to around 1971 at 'Ajanta,' a coffee shop located in Maruyama. It is said that the origin was a medicinal soup devised by the owner, Muneo Tatsujiri, combining Indian spices with Chinese herbal medicines for the health of his ailing father and himself. The name 'Soup Curry' wasn't adopted until 1993. Today, more than 200 specialty shops are crowded throughout Sapporo. It is a soul food of Sapporo that heals you from within.
