Iwanai Seafood

Facing the Sea of Japan, Iwanai Town is a historic port town in Hokkaido, opened during the Edo period for trade with the Ainu people. From the late Edo period, the town flourished greatly due to the herring fishery, and Iwanai's herring was transported across the country via Kitamaebune ships. Even after the herring eventually disappeared, the high-level processing and preservation techniques refined in this town have been firmly passed down. The various processed products using cod and herring, such as dried herring (mikaki nishin) and cod roe (tarako), are proof that this tradition lives on today. We invite you to bring these carefully prepared gifts from the sea to your dining table. With every bite, you will be able to taste the wisdom that this port town has accumulated over many years.
