Mukawa Shishamo
When it comes to the production area for authentic shishamo, Mukawa Town is undoubtedly the place. During the brief two-month period from October to November, the shishamo migrate toward the Mukawa River to spawn; this has led them to be designated as the town's official 'Town Fish' in 1995. Authentic shishamo are caught only along the Pacific coast of Hokkaido. Their reddish hue and plump appearance distinguish them from imported varieties. The sight of harvested shishamo being hung on bamboo mats to dry under eaves has become a seasonal hallmark of autumn in Mukawa. The females are filled with eggs that burst with a delightful texture, while the males offer a rich, savory flavor. The fact that the males are just as delicious is part of the charm of authentic shishamo. Please take the opportunity to taste the real deal, available only during the fishing season, straight from its place of origin.
