Cherry Blossoms in Shizunai
The Nijikken-dori Sakura Trees in Shizunai, Shin-Hidaka Town, is one of Japan's leading cherry blossom sites, stretching approximately 7km in a straight line. The name originates from the fact that both sides of the road are twenty-ken (about 36m) wide. Originally developed over three years starting in 1916 as a route for the Imperial Family to inspect the royal grazing lands, about 2,000 trees were planted, primarily Ezo-yamazakura. Many of these old trees are over 90 years old, and the site has been selected as one of the '100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan' and is a 'Hokkaido Heritage' site. Peak bloom occurs in early May. After walking through the tunnel of cherry blossoms, enjoying local gourmet food from the festival stalls—this kind of flower viewing colors the spring in Hidaka. Please enjoy the spring in Hokkaido along this pale pink avenue.
