Horsehair Crab
Esashi Town, facing the Sea of Okhotsk, boasts the highest landing volume of horsehair crab in Japan. In this port town located at 45 degrees north latitude, 'post-icebreak horsehair crab' are landed immediately after the drift ice recedes. Having accumulated plenty of plankton under the drift ice, these crabs have firm meat and rich crab miso (tomalley). In 1967, the first 'Esashi Crab Festival' was started with the hope of expanding consumption. Held every summer, this festival has become a beloved event where you can enjoy horsehair crab in abundance. With sweet, densely packed meat and thick, creamy crab miso, enjoying a final sip of miso from the shell is a pleasure unique to horsehair crab. Please come and fully enjoy the excellence nurtured in Japan's top producing region.
