Do you think oysters are only for winter? Akkeshi oysters can actually be enjoyed deliciously all year long. There is a reason why Akkeshi is the only place in Japan capable of shipping oysters year-round. Due to the influence of the Oyashio Current, the water temperature in Lake Akkeshi remains low, allowing the oysters to grow slowly; by managing this growth, shipments can be maintained throughout the year. The land has a deep historical connection with oysters, with some theories suggesting the place name originates from an Ainu word meaning 'the place where there are oysters.' Carefully nurtured brand oysters, including the premium 'Kakiemon' from Akkeshi, are produced here. Raised in brackish waters rich in plankton, these oysters have a plump texture.
