Trappist Butter

When spread on toast, the sweet aroma of milk gently rises. This is a rare fermented butter made at the Our Lady of the Lighthouse, Trappist Monastery in Hokuto City. This monastery was the first men's Trappist monastery in Japan, founded by monks who arrived from France in 1896. Since its founding, the monks have worked hard on land reclamation and livestock farming; during the Meiji era, after years of research, they perfected a butter-making process that ferments the cream of raw milk with lactic acid bacteria. Even today, each batch is prepared by hand alongside their prayers. The richness and mellow aroma unique to fermented butter offer a depth that is distinctly different from commercially available butter. If you use it for baking, you will surely be surprised by the difference in flavor.
